Biscayne Bay is barely three metres deep across much of its width — a shallow saltwater lagoon, not open ocean, which is precisely why fast, low-draft hulls have worked here for a century.
The bay was dredged into its modern shape between 1905 and the 1920s, when Government Cut was blasted through the peninsula to give Miami a deep-water port. The spoil from that dredging became islands. Star Island, Palm Island and Hibiscus Island are all man-made, poured from bay bottom and sold as building lots to the newly wealthy. Fisher Island, once attached to Miami Beach, was severed by the same cut.
